And with fiancee Penny Lancaster watching in the audience, and dancing along enthusiastically throughout the set, he had plenty of reason to give a five-star performance.
Coming on stage bizarrely to Hail Hail the Celts are here, the rocker launched into the set with Forever Young, working the length of the stage clad in trademark tight black jeans and a leopard-print shirt in black, white and yellow.
Giving an exuberant performance, belying his 60 years, he followed with Young Turks and announced: “We are doing 30 songs this evening,” to wild approval. The set was peppered with covers, including his Motown faves This Old Heart Of Mine and It Takes Two.
And yes, judging by the screams at the slightest wiggle of his hips, the Glasgow crowd do still think he’s sexy. At one point he declared: “I’m so excited I’m actually nervous for the first time in my life tonight.” The latter part of the set was packed with classics: a rollicking Maggie May, Do Ya Think I’m Sexy and the inevitable Sailing.
Finishing up with Wild Mountain Thyme, Rod shed a tear and wound up an emotional evening.
