American recording artist and songwriter Hollis Mahady has recorded a great cover of Rod’s 1981 hit Young Turks.
When we told Hollis that we were going to post it on SMILER so Rod’s fans could check it out she told us..
‘That’s so cool you stumbled upon my version of young turks. I am a big Rod fan myself!!
I wanted to do a cover a few years back of Rod. When I was younger I always used to sing Reason to Belive and play the solo on my harmonica. I grew up with him . I chose Young Turks because I just loved the chorus and the sentiment of the song . I also thought it would be interesting to make it a little faster and see how it would turn out . I am an American but have always been influenced by British music.I was living in London the last few years with my band Love Zombies. I just recently moved home to California and am currently recording our debut album’.

‘Young Turks’ first appeared in 1981 on Rod’s album Tonight I’m Yours. The term Young Turk, which originates from the same-named secular nationalist reform party of the early 20th century, is slang for a rebellious youth who acts contrary to what is deemed normal by society.
The music for the song was composed by Carmine Appice, Duane Hitchings, and Kevin Savigar, with lyrics written by Rod. The song, which was released as the first single from Tonight Iām Yours, was produced with synthesizers and a hi-hat played over a drum machine. On the Billboard Hot 100, “Young Turks” debuted at no. 61 on 17 October 1981 and peaked at no. 5 on 19 December 1981 ā 9 January 1982. The song peaked at no. 11 on the UK Singles Chart and also was a top 5 hit in Australia, Belgium, Israel (no. 1) and Canada. The song was also featured on the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas soundtrack on the in-game classic rock radio station K-DST.
