With the Bob Dylan in the news this week Jan Kittelsen has a Dylan related question…
ROD STEWART COVERS DYLAN:
Bob Dylan has just sold his entire song catalogue to Universal Music, signing over the rights and royalties to more than 600 songs from 1962 to 2020. This is a blockbuster deal estimated to be worth between $300 million and $450 million. However, the business tycoons are not the only one to value Dylan’s song writing.
Bob Dylan is actually one of the absolute most covered artists in the history of music. Rolling Stones, Adele, Eric Clapton, Johnny Cash, Bryan Ferry, Dolly Parton, Joe Cocker, Elvis Presley and Jimi Hendrix are just some of the few artist that comes to mind who have all had success with Dylan covers.
The question of course is always: Would you rather hear the Dylan version?
As we all know, Rod Stewart has taken some Dylan songs and given them his personal twist to make them even better. However, did you know how many? I myself was overwhelmed when I started counting!
Rod has covered no other songwriter as extensively as Bob Dylan. Over the years 11 Dylan penned songs have been recorded and released by Rod. In addition, he has recorded 3 songs by other songwriters which were previously covered and released by Dylan. Together the 14 tracks make up playing time for more than a full album.
The question with covers of course is always: Would you rather hear the original version? I think Rod’s versions is always as good as Dylan’s, and on many of the songs it is quite remarkable how much they are improved by Rod’s treatment.
Here is the full list:
Man Of Constant Sorrow (1969) covered by Dylan 1962
Wicked Messenger (1970) w/Faces
Only A Hobo (1970)
Tomorrow Is A Long Time (1971)
Mama, You’ve Been On My Mind (1972)
Girl From The North Country (1974)
Just Like A Woman (1981)
Sweetheart Like You (1995)
Love Minus Zero/No Limit (1997)
If Not For You (2006)
This Wheel’s On Fire (2009) (recorded 1992)
The Groom’s Still Waiting At The Altar (2009) (recorded 1992)
Corrina Corrina (2013) covered by Dylan 1963
Rollin’ and Tumblin’ (2018) covered by Dylan 2006
Any suggestions to which other Bob Dylan songs do you think would benefit from being covered by Rod Stewart?
One reply on “Rod sings Dylan”
Jan
Answer:
Just about any Bob Dylan song as Rod covers them so well and they totally suit Rods voice!
For years there’s been a little group of us on here hoping that Rod would do a full album of Dylan covers.
