Guinness is good for Rod

Rod called in Murphy’s Irish Bar in Glasgow last Wednesday on his way to see Celtic V Livingston with John McLaughlin of Johnny Mac and the Faithful who told Glasgow Live: “Rod had just flown in for the game and as usual we headed for Murphy’s. There’s a lovely wee room there that’s like the snug in a proper old Donegal bar so we were in there and Rod fancied a Guinness.
“The bar man was still setting up so Rod nipped behind the bar – we’re part of the furniture in there so it was fine – and had a go.
“His effort was more head than pint but one of the expert staff came in and showed him how to do it properly with the whole double pour thing.
“Rod said his second go was the best pint he had ever had in his life!”
John added: “The two of us are in there all the time, it’s our football pub, we head straight for Murphy’s as soon as Rod lands as the atmosphere is incredible, the music is brilliant and everyone is so welcoming.
You know Rod, there’s no airs or graces, he’s in amongst it singing his heart out and loves meeting fans.
“We love a Celtic singalong before and after the game, win lose or draw. There’s never any bother in Murphy’s, everyone is sound and welcomes us with open arms.
“It’s a real home from home for Rod and I – it’s genuinely the first place we go from the airport every time.”
Celtic won 2-1.

This Weeks Rod Art

This weeks Rod art is something we have never featured before, mirror art, it was spotted in The Crewe and Harpur by Jane Mellor who told SMILER this week
‘Hubby and I went to see Pete McCall (Rod tribute) last night at a pub called The Crewe & Harpur, Swarkestone, Derbyshire.
They had a row of mirrors high up on a wall advertising different events. (I stood on a seat for the photo).
Pete and I were both admiring the Rod mirror and I asked one of the staff if I could buy it. She said they are all done by a local artist and not for sale.’

Rod’s hangover Cure
You might need this over the weekend as it always comes in handy after New Years Eve..The ‘Hangover cure’ Rod gave to Robin Le Mesurier and Peggy Sue Honeyman-Scott for their 1988 book Rock N’ Roll Cuisine.
Rod’s Hangover Sandwich….
All you need is wholewheat bread, two eggs (one if for insurance “in case one should go adrift”), butter and you’re set.

“Approach the stove from a westerly direction, making sure of one’s footing,” instructs Stewart. “With clean hands, set forth a match to the gas ring and stand back. In an orderly but brisk fashion, place the cooking utensil of your choice over the flame and without further ado, crack forth the egg into the pan. Notwithstanding any notable catastrophes, rescue the egg from the pan and place between two well-buttered slices of bread, these having previously been administered with a goodly portion of ham. Add salt and pepper, find a quiet corner, a comfy chair, a morning journal and sober up.”
Rod Stewart at the BBC 2

A second collection of archive appearances by Rod, featuring clips of recent appearances and exclusive live shows, as well as rarely seen BBC performances of hits including Tonight’s the Night, It’s a Heartache, Have I Told You Lately and Sailing will be shown on BBC Two on Saturday 7th January 8:00pm-9:00pm (1 hour)

FourFourTwo January 2023

In the latest edition of football magazine FourFourTwo [January 2023] The team get to attend a Celtic match with Rod.
‘We analyse how Mikel Arteta took Arsenal from a toxic crisis at his 2019 arrival to five points clear on top of the Premier League.
Elsewhere, we chat to Italian maestro Andrea Pirlo about Mersey misery, management and Manchester City, reflect on a remarkable 12 months with Lionesses hero Beth Mead, watch a Celtic match alongside Rod Stewart, head to Los Angeles to witness a frenzied MLS Cup final, and ask former Leicester, Sunderland and Republic of Ireland gaffer Martin O’Neill your questions’.
