Rhythm of Rod’s Heart

Rod Stewart was greeted by a sea of tartan on his long awaited return to Scotland last night.

The veteran rocker, 57, had been forced to postpone shows in Ireland and Scotland last week due to illness.

Whether his sore throat had mended made little difference to the fans. Gravel-voiced Rod looked superfit and the 10,000 crowd at Glasgow’s SECC hung on his every word.

Rod was in top form as he sang hits stretching back more than 30 years, including Faces favourite Stay With Me, Tonight I’m Yours and Rhythm Of My Heart.

Among the highlights were I Don’t Wanna Talk About It, which Rod dedicated to England goalie David Seaman – no doubt only too aware of the song’s first line: “I can tell by your eyes that you’ve probably been crying forever”. Rod name-checked former Faces bandmate Ronnie Wood and revealed that the Stones guitarist’s attempts to stay off the wagon are proving tough.

Before delivering his version of Every Picture Tells A Story, Rod said: “He hasn’t had a drink for three months. He looks dead miserable.”

His signature tune Maggie May proved another emotional high point as he stared out at the sea of saltires and lion rampants. Nice one Rod.
