The famous Eel Pie Club in Twickenham is a big part of Rod’s history and now the The Eel Pie Island Museum team want to bring the history to life, they have created a place where people can come and learn about everything the little island in the centre of Twickenham has to offer in the way of musical and river-related heritage.
Global superstars such as Rod, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and many more started out on their path to fame at The Eel Pie Club and curator Michele Whitby told SMILER ‘We’d love to see Rod’s fans there! We are just minutes away from Twickenham Station, where Long John Baldry discovered ‘a bundle of rags with a huge nose’ playing harmonica in the fog – or so the story goes!’
Rod first played at Eel Pie in 1964 with The Hoochie Coochie Men he also played the venue later with The Soul Agents, and Steampacket.
The museum started following the success of the Eelpiland exhibition at the Stables Gallery in 2013 and the pop-up Museum over the summer of 2015,The Eel Pie Island Museum has now found a more permanent venue right in the heart of Twickenham. The Museum is now open in its new home at 1-3 Richmond Road, Twickenham TW1 3AB (opposite the Civic Centre, next to the Shell garage).
Opening hours are Thursday-Sunday 12.00-6.00pm (last admission 5.30pm). Times and days outside of this are available on request (for groups etc).
