Faces reached another creative high watermark with Ooh La La. Dropping March 1973 and produced by Glyn Johns at Olympic Studios in London, it would be the final proper album recorded by the powerhouse lineup of Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, Ian McLagan, Ronnie Lane, and Kenney Jones. After bowing at #1 on the UK Albums Chart, its influence has only grown over the years. The title track “Ooh La La” famously soundtracked the end of the Wes Anderson classic Rushmore, while “Glad and Sorry” appeared in Blow. Looking back on the record, American Songwriter raved, “To their credit, Faces rose to the occasion at just the right time with their strongest set of songs.”
The liner notes for Ooh La La boast a highly rare and utterly fascinating conversation between Glyn Johns and Kenney Jones, including commentary by reissue producer Rob Caiger. Their discussion spans everything from how Johns recorded the drummer with just “one overhead mic plus one on the side” to the incredible musical union at the heart of the group, as the producer proclaims, “The thing about the Faces was they were a band! There was no leader. They were all equal.” Most importantly, they paint the picture of “an incredibly good time had by all” during the creation of this LP.

Uncut
Kenney, Mac and Ronnie are also featured in this months Uncut magazine out today

For Kenney Jones, reclaiming the Small Faces legacy has been a lengthy battle, doggedly pursuing unpaid royalties and restoring the management of this beloved group’s back catalogue. “I don’t think any band’s been treated worse than the Small Faces,” Jones’s former bandmate Ian McLagan ruefully told Uncut in 2014. Jones’s achievements, then, are nothing short of heroic – as this month’s cover story attests. Nominally a celebration of the posthumous – and now radically expanded – The Autumn Stone album, our cover story explores the band’s tumultuous 1968, discovering along the way tantalising new insights into the music they made in their final year together. “It’s amazing how many songs we did in such a short space of time,” says Jones. “ And how much we’ve touched people. Did I think it was going to last? It never entered my mind. But here we are, 60 years later, still talking about it.”
Print editions of this month’s issue also come with an exclusive Small Faces CD featuring a slew of rare mixes, alternate takes and live cuts. Everything a young mod could possibly ask for, in other words.

Fan Voting
Vote for Rod Stewart’s former saxophonist Katja Rieckermann! By Martin Heidt

Rod fans all over the world, now it’s your turn! A major competition is currently underway in the USA for musicians who can win a performance at the legendary Wango Tango Festival on 10 May at Huntington City Beach. Among the musicians who have applied to perform this year is Katja Rieckermann, who played saxophone in Rod Stewart’s band from 2001 to 2015.
The Wango Tango Festival, which offers audiences a mix of many different musical genres, is always held on a single day in May or June each year and is organised by Los Angeles radio station KIIS FM. The venues vary, and the festival has already been held at the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles or the Staples Centre.
The birth of Wango Tango was on 13 June 1998 at the Edison International Field of Anaheim, where Mariah Carey, Gloria Estefan, Will Smith, Tom Jones and Olivia Newton-John, among others, performed on stage.
The list of artists over the years reads like a who’s who of the music scene: Britney Spears, Aerosmith, Bee Gees, Pink, Celine Dion, Kiss, Sting, Jennifer Lopze, Shakira, Taylor Swift – they have all performed at Wango Tango, some of them several times.
This year’s artist line-up includes Gwen Stefani, David Guetta and Meghan Trainor. The winners of the fan voting will perform in the festival’s opening programme on the Main Stage and really get the audience going before the big stars take to the stage.
So, vote as often as you can and enable Katja to be part of this big event in May. Voting runs until 6 April. Click on the button below to go directly to the voting.

And finally…
Rod and John Lydon are the victims of the latest sketch by Comedy Impressionist Stevie Riks
Stevie’s impressions have a big following and he has impersonated Rod before in one of his popular Gary Barlow sketches he is a musician in his own right and was a member of The Rockin Berries (1995 – 2000) – He has also had a No11 song on the Charts – and won New Faces in 1988

Maybe don’t watch if you are easily offended and look at this brilliant shot of Rod by Sherry Rebecca Parton instead, although we are sure Rod will see the funny side…John maybe not!
And unless I’m on the Late Side, I will see you next week..
