The Rod Stewart Musical, Tonight’s The Night played at the Regent Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent between Monday 24th March to Saturday 29th March 2014.
My first musical! I have never been to a musical before because I never thought I would enjoy it, however my mum is a huge Rod Stewart fan so when she heard about Tonight’s The Night I had no choice but to say yes! We invited my gran and sister to come along with us, although they are not fans of Rod Stewart, they agree and we booked front row seats. At the end of the show both my gran and sister said they enjoyed the show, proving that you don’t have to be a fan of Rod’s to see this musical!
Written by Ben Elton and directed by Caroline Jay Ranger, it follows the story of Stuart (Ben Heathcote) a shy, sensitive geek from Detroit, who is unable to tell the girl of his dreams, Mary (Jenna Lee-James) that he loves her. He decides to sell his soul to the Devil for Rod Stewart’s soul and he is transformed into a rockstar touring the country.
The night started off with a bang (quite literally as there was a thunderstorm in Stoke that night!). The cast was extremely talented in both singing and dancing. The stage design was spot on and it was non stop throughout the show. Stoner (Michael McKell) stole the show for me. I looked forward to every scene that he was in, he played the lovable drunken old rock star very well. The live band added to the rockstar feel to the show and the stage design was spot on.
For me the best part of the show was the Megamix at the end. The cast and band played a medley of Rod’s greatest hits and all the the audience were on their feet having a good time. I did expect people to be up dancing during the show but this didnt happen, which I am glad of as I think it would have spoiled the story, so it was good to have a dance and sing at the end of the show.
Overall I really enjoyed the show, the storyline and the performances from the cast. It has definitely put me in the mood for seeing Rod in the summer at Britannia Stadium, this time we will be front row for the real thing! Watch this space for a front-row-experience of Rod Stewart’s summer tour 2014…
