We Are Sailing.. down the aisle

Garry and Sonya’s wedding with a difference

On 16th January, Garry Chapman and Sonya Lewis were married in a small intimate ceremony in their home in Northlakes, a Suburb north of Brisbane, Australia organised by Kelly Harby aka Kel The Celebrant.

Garry was dressed as Rod from 1975 and Sonya was dressed as Marylyn Munro in full ‘Some Like it Hot’ costume

Kelly told SMILER “Garry and Sonia had us in stitches as Garry shared some of the funniest and best Personal Vows I’ve heard for a long time. Sonya was just as creative, declaring her love and intentions by using lyrics from a movie that inspired many of yesterday’s shenanigans! (think Adam Sandler).Their family all dressed up as well, we had Tina Turner, Freddy, Nicki Minaj and and many more. Was so much fun. I loved being part of this, and know that with all their love and laughter that they share already in their lives, Garry & Sonya will have an amazing and somewhat hysterical marriage! Garry also designed and built the aisles and arbour for their special day!”

Garry also explained the reason why he just had to be Rod on his special day

“Moving away from a traditional wedding the idea of a fun filled costume wedding with a musical theme seemed just perfect for us to share our special day with family.

My thoughts of who I should dress as took me straight back to my teenage years when my all time favourite Rod Stewart released ‘Sailing’. The first time I saw Rod Stewart perform ‘Sailing’ I was immediately drawn to the voice, the image and the personality. Like Rod I too was a bit of a Larikin, had a keen interest in playing soccer and after a childhood of short back and sides adored the iconic long hair that Rod fashioned. The 1975 album ‘Atlantic Crossing’ became my all time favourite but is was ‘Sailing that I adored most of all and of course had to sing a little to my new wife as part of our ceremony.

On the 16th of January on went the long haired wig, white flared pants, black tie and the sailors cap to make this special day most memorable for all that shared it with us. Why wouldn’t any woman want to be marrying ‘Rod Stewart’”

Everyone at SMILER would like to wish Mr and Mrs Chapman all the best for the future and we hope they have a long and happy marriage.
